Out of the forest bordering Durham, NC comes Luego, one of the Triangle's most promising young indie-rock acts. The paths of guitarist and vocalist Patrick Phelan, bassist Spike Brehm, cellist and multi-instrumentalist Dan Carlin and drummer Dan Cook, came together soon after Phelan and Carlin graduated college together and Luego's genuine sound that reflects their wide range, in both feel and era, of influences from pop idols like the Beatles to newer acts like Wilco and Spoon, from classical to funk to house and back again. Indeed, as the Independent Weekly, one of the nation's premiere local alternative papers, praised how "the band's smarts lies in its balance between warm, folksy Dylan-esque rock-economics and the solid build of weepy symphony strings." Fresh off the completion of their new EP, I Know, I Know, Luego's catalogue has expanded considerably, both in substance and in subject matter. Phelan's lip-curling electric guitar play, distinctive vocals and sharp pop hooks seem to float just above Brehm and Cooks' driving, groovy beats. Their promise to bring something primal back into the indie-rock experience is reflected in their energetic, head-bobbing live performances that evince the emotions of Phelan's thoughtful, literate and surrealistically wide-eyed songwriting.
